MONEY
Financial Mobility and Retirement Planning
Ne’er the Twain Shall Meet?
Perhaps and perhaps not, is the mysterious phrase I have chosen to open up this topic. Many people, over the course of their working life, move from one place to another in order to improve their lifestyle, advance their career or be closer to loved ones. I think generally we make these moves for all the right emotional reasons without taking stock of what it might mean to other elements of our life. That does not make the choice wrong by any stretch of the imagination but it may mean that our life, and in particular our financial life, is made more complicated.
Retirement planning is often left to chance, relying on state and corporate generosity. As expatriates our state and corporate entitlements may very well be adversely affected not only by the factors that are at work generally in the world but also by our very special situation. Mobile saving solutions exist to serve the expatriate community. Are you using them? Are you saving at all?

BUSINESS
Common Vision
Why do you come to work? Is it for money, achievement, challenge, being part of a team, enjoyment or recognition? For many people, work has simply become a habit.
However, the above question tends to arise with some force at certain times: birthdays, particularly ones that end with a zero; Christmas / New Year; the weeks following the end of a major project; during a major conflict with a colleague or customer; or after a holiday.
At such times, your team-members will also be jolted out of the habitual, and will ask why they are working with you.
John Niland tells us about the benefits of having a common goal in your company.

LEISURE
The Netherlands: A European Hub
If you’re a regular reader of The XPat Journal, you may have seen quite a lot of the Netherlands by now. Perhaps you’ve spent a weekend or two walking the Pieterpad (Pieter Path) stretching from Pieterburen in the North of the Netherlands to the Pieter mountain in the South; or maybe you’ve flown over the Friesian lakes in a hot air balloon and sailed in an old Dutch Skûtsje; you may even have spent an afternoon sludging around in the Wadden Sea looking for mussels and oysters.
Another thing that makes this country such a nice one to live in is its geographical position – lending it the natural position of European hub. This city special of The XPat Journal is devoted to four of Europe’s most lively and cosmopolitan cities that are a short one hour flight away from Schiphol airport; Berlin, London, Paris and Antwerp. In other words, ideal for a weekend of Christmas shopping, sightseeing, and museum/bar hopping.
This winter, we encourage our readers to discover Europe in all its seasonal glory.

EXPAT LIVING
Chances in an Extended Europe
Contrary to what most parties probably hoped for, hassle-free movement between job-seeking citizens of current and new member states did not become reality after May 1, 2004; the day that ten new countries joined the European Union. What are the opportunities that an enlarged Europe brings seven months after accession? Nannette Ripmeester, founder of Expertise in Labour Mobility, explains.
